The official visit of District 7770 Governor, Sandy Morckel

DG Sandy brought greetings from the RI President and had inspiring as well as challenging words for us. She encouraged us to be intentional and to think about collaborating with other area clubs. She encouraged us to do sonething special for World Polio Day, October 24 to increase awareness or even to raise funds to “End Polio Now” She covered the big three: Membership - consider doing a “Discover Rotary” function; Foundation - ½ comes back in 3 years - use Rotary Direct to donate; Public image - use press releases, social media. The District Conference will be held at the North Charleston Marriott. Be intentional, create, inspire, unite.

We learned about Spirit of Sebastian Foundation.

Speakers were Joe Sullivan (left) and Javier Zimbron (right). The foundation was created in memory of Javier's son Sebastian Zimbron, who tragically lost his live to fentanyl at the age of 21. The Foundation is focused on raising awareness, providing prevention and fighting for recovery.

The personal stories that they shared with us touched us and created an awareness that many of us did not have before. They are able to help many people by sending them to recovery treatment. They have found that a minimum of 90 day programs are needed. 85% of the people that they have helped stay sober. This year they have 23 in treatment. So far they have been able to help everyone who wants help, unfortunately not everyone wants help. We learned that today many things are laced with fentanyl that you might not suspect - vape, marijuana and other substances. The goal is to create awareness at an early age - they present programs in the schools to reach the young. To learn more about Spirit of Sebastian, visit their website: spiritofsebastian.org.
