April 22
Speaker was Ann Caywood who spoke about Low Country Legal Volunteers
Low Country Legal Volunteers is celebrating 25 years as a non-profit.. It is volunteer based with very few paid positions. They need board members - you do not have to be an attorney.  They average 200 cases per year. The goal is to have everyone to have access to justice.  They no not do divorces unless there are minor children. They have outreach clinics, do adult name changes, family law, etc. and have provided 2.95 million in free legal services, impacting 2700 people.  They rely on donations and have fundraisers: September 13 is the Low Country Boil, October 11 Attorney Chase - 5K.  and are active on social media and website

Hopeful Horizons information was presented by Kristin Dubrowski
Hopeful Horizons is a children's advocacy, domestic violence and sexual assault victim service organization.  They "create safer communities by changing the culture of violence and offering a path to healing"  Their mission is to "Protect, treat + Prevent. " Their services include: 24 hour crisis intervention, forensic interviews and medical evaluation for child abuse victims, emergency safe shelter and transitional housing, comprehensive civil legal services, advocacy and case management,, prevention programs, outreach, professional trainings, community education, multi disciplinary case coordination.. In 2024 they assisted more than 1562 victims of child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault; conducted 411 forensic interviews and 38 forensic medicals; provided 4236 nights of safe shelter for 147 women and their children. Bev James provided an update on the scholarship selection.  The applicants were outstanding,  the scholarship was awarded to Mia Diamond. She is going to USC.  The members of the committee are: Bev, Nasser Shaheen, Sonny Huntley,  Let her know if you would like to join this committee.

We learned about the Morris Center
Speakers were Tamara Herring and Kayleigh Vaughn.  We learned about the history of the Morris center which was founded by Danny Morris  The museum did not open until ten years after Danny's death.   The focus of the museum is the Battle of Honey Hill which took place November 30, 1864.  The museum is locasted in downtoan Ridgeland on US 17 in a 1937 historic Sinclair Service Station.  No admission is charge because the desire is to give the the entire commumity access to the history and information.  They offer creative workshops, family programs.  They are looking for volunteers - become a docent or an advisor. They are going to start annual campaign and memberships to help sustain them financially.  You can learn more at morrisheritagecenter.org
