Speaker:
Rich Thomas from the Santa Elena Foundation presented an interesting program.  Santa Elena is one of the most significant archaeological findings in the U.S.
While St. Augustine is thought to be the first city because there were three women in residence, Santa Elena brought families.  It was founded in 1566 on present day Parris Island.  That summer 250 reinforcements arrived for the fort and by 1569 there were 372 residents and 40 homes. Santa Elena was the first colonial capital of Spanish Florida. Last July the missing fort was discovered and the out lay of the town is fairly well known.  The Santa Elena Foundation is a 501C3 which provides educational outreach and has worked with most schools.  The museum is located in Beaufort and visits to the exhibits are encouraged.  This Saturday, November 18 the LowCountry Fair with a Historical Fair is being held at Cotton Hall Plantation in Yemassee from 10am to 4pm.  There will be tours of the Colonial Sugar Cane Mill, petting zoo, pony rides, and Marsh Tacky Races.  $20 adults, $10 children and some family admission cost as well.  For more information visit the Santa Elena website:  https://santa-elena.org
